Moving away from commissioned work and toward process-driven work has freed me to explore new directions without a finished product looming over me. Iterating, sketching, and experimenting with materials for their own sake has shaped a more personal, distinctive practice and helped me grow more confident and intentional as an artist.
A recent outgrowth of my process-driven approach has been an interest in animating textiles within a digital space. Translating materials prized for their movement and tactility into two dimensions has challenged me to evolve and revealed new avenues for my work.
Creating a pair of custom kicks is a deeply client-centered process. Each commission begins with getting to know my subject, so their shoes can reflect who they are. This pair was designed in close collaboration with the client, blending personal elements with my own designs inspired by their personality and interests. The result is a one-of-a-kind pair covered in customized art.
My design blocks are themed around whatever has captured my creative attention, serving as drawing boards for new ideas.
They are my way into a blank page: a place to gather interests, test colors and motifs, and follow a spark until it becomes a direction. Amid the chaos, ideas take shape, sometimes as shoes, sometimes as digital work, textiles, or something entirely new.
They often resonate with clients as well, inspiring more personal concepts for their own custom pieces.
When my design blocks aren't sparking a direction, my comics help me break through.
They help me to find my footing again, taking myself less seriously reminding me that sometimes a lighter touch makes for a stronger creative process. The joy I feel in making them seems to resonate with my community, and these comics are among my most loved pieces with the people who follow my creative practice.
